FOODS THAT HELP HYPERTHYROIDISM

Stimulate Your Weight Loss And Improve Overall Health

5 Foods to Help Relieve Mild Symptoms

There’s no such thing as a hyperthyroidism diet, but what you eat matters. Hyperthyroidism—when your thyroid gland produces too much thyroid hormone—can’t be prevented or treated though diet alone. It’s often treated with prescription medication, so see your doctor immediately if you have hyperthyroidism symptoms. But by eating certain foods, you can limit some mild hyperthyroidism symptoms.

HYPOTHYROIDISM 101

Thyroid hormone tells all of the cells in your body how busy they should be. Too much thyroid hormone (hypERthyroidism), and your body goes into overdrive; not enough thyroid hormone (hypOthyroidism), and your body slows down.  The most common causes of hypothyroidism worldwide are dietary—protein malnutrition and iodine deficiency.  This is because the two main ingredients needed to make thyroid hormone are tyrosine (an amino acid from dietary protein) and iodine (a naturally-occurring salt).

In the developed world, where protein is plentiful and many countries add iodine to salt and processed foods, we don’t typically need to worry about protein malnutrition or iodine deficiency.  However, the rest of the world is not so lucky. More than 2 billion people around the world suffer from hypothyroidism due to iodine deficiency.  2 billion!  We are told that the reason for this planetary epidemic is that iodine comes from the ocean, and that the soil of inland areas has had most of its iodine washed away over time by erosion:

“A teaspoon of iodine is all a person requires in a lifetime, but because iodine cannot be stored for long periods by the body, tiny amounts are needed regularly. In areas of endemic iodine deficiency, where soil and therefore crops and grazing animals do not provide sufficient dietary iodine to the populace, food fortification and supplementation have proven highly successful and sustainable interventions

IODINE REQUIREMENTS

We are told that humans need an average of about 150 micrograms of iodine per day.  Below is the iodine content of some familiar foods [in micrograms]:

  • Cod Fish (3 ounces) = 99
  • Shrimp (3 ounces) = 35
  • Turkey (3 ounces) = 34
  • Low-fat milk (1 cup) = 56
  • Egg (1 large) = 24
  • Prunes (5 whole) = 13
  • Banana (1 whole) = 3
There are also some very good over the counter Thyroid Care supplements that may do the trick. They contain iodine and other nutrients your body may be lacking. We suggest trying Thyroid Care Capsules

What to Eat for Hyperthyroidism

Can Berries Boost Your Health?

From strawberries to blueberries to raspberries—the choice is yours. Berries pack a powerful punch because they’re bursting with antioxidants, which keep your immune system strong. Eat a serving of berries every day.

Cook with Cruciferous Veggies

Broccoli is part of the goitrogen family—foods that can decrease the amount of thyroid hormone your thyroid gland produces. Foods that belong to this group are known as “cruciferous” foods. Not a broccoli fan? Other cruciferous veggies include cauliflower, kale, and cabbage. Eat one or more servings of these veggies a day.

Get More Dairy in Your Diet

Untreated hyperthyroidism can eventually weaken your bones and may lead to osteoporosis. To prevent this, get 3 servings a day of calcium from yogurt or other dairy foods, such as cheese and milk.

Recipe:
- Hand full of fresh spinach
- 1/3 Cup of Real Pomegranate Juice
- 1 Tablespoon Chia Seed
- 1 Tablespoon Golden Milled Flax Seed
- Hand Full of Blue Berries
- 1 Banana
- 3 Strawberries
- 1 Scoop Vanilla Whey Protein
- 1/2 Cup Greek Yogurt
- ! Cup Ice
Blend in a high speed blender or smoothie maker.

Vitamin D and Omega-3s for Thyroid Health

Salmon contains vitamin D—an essential nutrient that works with calcium to prevent bone loss. Salmon also carries a megadose of omega-3 fatty acids that keep you healthy. Your body doesn’t naturally produce these fatty acids, so you have to get them from food. If you’re not into fish, get your vitamin D from eggs and mushrooms and your omega-3s from walnuts, olive oil, and flaxseed oil. Eats foods with these nutrients daily.

Who Says Turkey Should Be Reserved for Thanksgiving?

Turkey is an excellent source of protein—important because your body needs protein for energy and to build and maintain muscle. Weight loss is a common hyperthyroidism symptom, so eating enough protein can help ensure you stay at a healthy weight. Don’t eat meat? No problem—you can get protein from beans and nuts. Just try to eat protein at every meal.
